Psychosexual Therapy at Renew Counselling

PPsychosexual therapy offers a forum to empower you to deal with sexual and communication problems in a healthy way and to help you to constructively express your sexual needs. Likewise the therapeutic process can help you to broaden your choices of sensual and sexual expression for a more fulfilling relationship.

Who can benefit from psychosexual therapy?

Here at Renew we offer help to couples and individuals of all sexual orientations. You don’t have to be in a relationship to benefit from seeing a sex therapist. Couples – whether married, co-habiting or living separately – are encouraged to come for therapy together to explore their concerns; whilst some individuals may prefer to see a therapist on their own.

At Renew we do appreciate that speaking openly about your concerns to someone close can be really hard and often cause embarrassment; equally, we recognise that holding on to these feelings can take their toll on your sex-life, your relationships and your overall emotional well-being.

Some of the issues brought to psychosexual therapy include:

  • General breakdown in a couple’s relationship.
  • Fear of intimacy and avoidance of sex.
  • Sexual difficulties following abuse.
  • Poor body image relating to intimacy.
  • Loss of sexual desire.
  • Painful intercourse.
  • Difficulties with orgasm.
  • Premature or delayed ejaculation.

What you can expect

To help clients overcome the initial challenges of seeing a therapist, we provide a relaxed and safe environment for you and your partner to talk through the issue, with a trusted and supportive therapist. Your therapist will simply listen and be open to hearing about these sexual feelings and concerns; at no time will there be any physical contact/touch or examination.

What happens next?

You will be encouraged to explore past experiences and sexual attitudes and work through how these may be impacting on your current relationship. Because sexual problems can manifest in different ways and to different degrees, some problems may be easily overcome whilst others may require longer-term therapy.

Your psychosexual counsellor at Renew will provide an honest approach to discussing issues of a sexual nature, whatever the causes. Once you and your therapist have gained greater understanding and depth of the problem, your therapist may put together a course of exercises that you can practise in the privacy of your own home. You and your therapist will work together to tackle pre-existing communication challenges which are revealed from the therapeutic process and develop improved intimacy.

What qualifications will your psychosexual therapist have?

Your psychosexual therapist is a registered member of the College of Sexual and Relationship Therapists (COSRT). She will abide by their strict Code of Ethics and Principles of Good Practice for members and a Complaints Procedure. She is also an Accredited Member of British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).
